Did you ever thought about making bags out of bike inner tubes? well… these guys from Mnmur thought about it for you and made these cool looking messenger bags. We’re always impressed when people take old, thrown-out objects and turn them into new, beautiful things.

Never under estimate the power of having a great clutch. I went through a phase recently where I thought that purses were just completely unnecessary- I have owned so many of them and in the end they all end up getting completely trashed, the lining rips, they end up being a portable trash can and I carry around things that I really don’t need at all. I decided I was going to ditch all of my purses that were making my shoulder ache and were turning into Mary Poppins bags, instead of necessities for an outfit. I started just carrying around a wallet, with my I.D., credit cards, important cards like triple A, medical cards, etc- this whole “new me” was going to be a little less vain, since I couldn’t carry around all my my makeup; the eyeliner, the powder, the eye shadow, the lip gloss- I wasn’t going to carry around my passport all the time (just in case I decided I wanted to flee), I wasn’t going to carry around an extra pair of socks (just in case), I would thus be someone who depended less and less on things really, I didn’t ever need? Well, lemme tell you what- that worked for about two weeks and then there were days when my lips were chapped, and I needed chap stick- but I couldn’t carry that in a wallet? Or how about the days when I knew I was going to spend the night at my boyfriend’s house and yes, I wanted to carry my toothbrush with me!? Then of course, vain or not- there were definitely times when I wish I would’ve brought my powder with me…. I’m Italian and lord knows that Mama get’s oily during the summer!
I have always a little mini heart attack when I take the girls to the grocery store or shopping with me. I like to keep them close to wherever I am. This is a crazy world and I am not about to take chances that my girls will wander away and then get lost. The Reisenthel Mother Child Bag solves this common problem with an astoundingly simple idea – a child-sized handle attached to the side of a shopping bag, It’s fabulous! Comes in four different colors. Price: $19.99 Buy it here: Touch of Europe
So you’re the kind that’s going to “think outside the box” the kind of person that is always finding a way to make something ordinary, something extraordinary…you find the different ways to make anything old “new again” and you are constantly inventing, reinventing and so on. Well if that sounds like the kind of person you are then this is the kind of shopping bag that you should own…it’s cute, it’s clever and it lends to the kind of person that has a creative mind. The re-usable animal shopping bag is white nylon shopping bag, that’s approximately 15″ x 15″ x 3″ when in use, stuffs into a heavy cotton small black pouch (the animals body) that is about 4″ x 2″ when full. The trick is, how many animals can you create out of it? A bunny, a butterfly, a squirrel?!
While I absolutely love and adore the man that I’m with we have one serious problem; he refuses to carry a wallet. What?! Exactly. Who refuses to carry a wallet? Why would you cause yourself the heartache? Instead of putting all of his cash, cards, and I.D. into a nicely packed little holder- he insists on throwing them in his pocket. When I say that he loses at least one debit card, or important piece of identification a week, I am not lying to you. This is getting old, fast and I’m sure the DMV is sick of seeing him. When I asked him what his issues were with carrying around a wallet he said, “They’re too big, and clunky…and they give you that weird faded spot on your jeans.
Some women are obsessed with their handbags, it’s all designer or nothing at all. I’ve never been one to wear faux designer, I’d rather wear something uniqe, than wear something imitation. What is our obsession with expensive bags anyway? I know Coach, Louis Vuitton, Dooney and Bourke and so on are all impeccably well made, they’re classic and they make a statement of a certain degree of wealth, or success. That being said, doesn’t carrying around a bad that’s unique make a statement also? My Mother has an amazing Louis sitting in her closet and she only uses it one “special” occasions, meaning the bag has left the darkness of the closet may four times a year…what’s the point of dropping a couple grand on a purse if it isn’t going to get worn in?! My philosophy with purses it that they should get a little wear and tear on them- I usually wear mine until I notice that my favorite lip gloss is missing because it’s slipped between the lining- once the lining is ripped, it’s time for a new bag.
There’s something about carrying around the canvas bags to shop for fancy, “organic” foods at pricey health food stores- or even better, to shop for pricey clothing, that is then placed nicely in your recyclable bag. Being green is absolutely chic and necessary- but Jessica Kagan Cushman has decided to take chic to a new level with her canvas, bags by cleverly poking at the fact that big designers haven’t jumped on the bang wagon.
The new ling of eco-friendly bags proudly state, “My other bag is a Hermés.” Snobbery aside, the bag is adorably cute and making light of the style world with a little quip. Jessica Kagan Cushman is known for her bold Nantucket bracelets, hand-carved original bangles that (like the canvas bags) proudly own what they are, with clever statement like, “I want to be the girl with the most cake” and other pop culture references. Venturing into the world of “chic GREEN design” seems like the most natural progression! There’s sort of a somewhat unspoken belief that the “green” culture is so “granola” that style doesn’t matter as much. Little do most people know being green isn’t just a fad of no-bra wearing liberals, with a gigantic vat of compost and kids named “river” running around their back yard, (though that is an adorable name.) Being GREEN isn’t only beneficial for this beautiful planet that we’re inhabiting, but it’s also catching on in the style world; interior designers, architects, clothing lines….and now canvas bags, are finding ways to keep with the integrity of their signature style, while being careful not to compromise the environment in the process. The “satire” canvas bags that Jessica has created makes a statement that it’s OK to love fashion, love style, care about the fact that you don’t want to carry around a canvas bag that only has the store brand name on it, if you love Prada, Bottega, Fendi, Gucci and so on- the carry a tote that says so! Even if that tote is full of broccoli and macaroni and cheese. Fashion minded people can stand up for the environment too. So carry this around, at least until Prada, Fendi, Bottega and so on start making their own canvas bags (sold strictly at Bergdorf Goodman’s)….can you imagine? If only all of us could afford that luxury. Until then, we can rock “green chic” and our label-loving selves with a Jessica Kagan Cushman bag. Price: $62 Buy it here: Colette
